Uncompatible Systems

Building a 3D workstation with CentOS 5.3

Dove in head on. Here's my list:

The Good:

• Yum has become extremely fast, on par with APT
• Xinerama configured through the Gnome System Administration menu
• Docuwiki is clear and thorough. Points to external repositories
• Audio and Video hardware autodetected
• USB Wacom tablet autodetected
• Gnome Wacom tablet configuration panel installed by default

The Bad:

• Video hardware autodetection does not have 3D drivers
• No Flash plugin
• Limited multimedia codecs
• USB soundcard autoconfiguration fails

The Ugly:

• Xinerama desktop spanning requires manual x.org config
• ATI proprietary drivers require individual kernel module compilation and installation which is not documented anywhere. Requires hacking through the filesystem and running build scripts in /lib/modules/fglrx/. Also requires crucial settings for 3D acceleration to perform in a visually acceptable way (read: 3D objects do not get clipped by a noisy black plane). These settings are also not documented and probably manifested from my particular hardware configuration.
• ATI drivers "documented" on a unofficial wiki that is out of date
• CentOS forum has first-post obssesed freetard douchebags ready to lead you down a rabbit hole with no end
• After configuring 3D drivers, Xinerama is rendered non-functional and Gnome is unaware of this fact. All screen control is given to the proprietary ATI Catalyst control panel.
